Technology in spill response

Alyeska's Tactical Oil Spill Model (ATOM) is a computer-based program for estimating spill trajectories in Prince William Sound. ATOM uses algorithms that translate meteorological and oceanographic information to predict where spilled oil would go, when it would get there, and in what state it would be in. ATOM provides two- and three-dimensional modeling capabilities and the Graphical Resource Database identifies sensitive resources and protection strategies. Its biological effects model uses trajectory data to predict biological impacts. ATOM is a powerful tool for helping direct spill response equipment and protecting biological and cultural resources.
