President's Message
David Wight, President and CEO

Safety doesn't stop at end of work day

Alyeska Pipeline Service Company takes great pride in maintaining safe work environments for all of our employees and contractors. We set and enforce stringent workplace safety standards. We mandate and provide appropriate safety training. And we track safety performance to identify and correct safety problems. Our managers keep it visible so that we never lose sight of its importance.

These efforts are paying off because Alyeska workers did not miss a single workday last year due to a work-related injury. This is only half the equation because our job is not complete unless the entire TAPS family of Alyeska and contractors goes home safely. We all have to work harder with sharing our safety philosophy to ensure this happens.

Good safety practices extend beyond the workplace. Our safety efforts are not nearly as effective if workers leave their job sites as healthy as when they arrived, and then go home and forget about safety.

Non-work injuries are just as bad as work-related injuries, so we want our workers to think and act as safely at home and play as they do at work. We want them to adopt a safe lifestyle all day, every day. And, encourage others to do the same.

Living safely is especially important now that the weather has warmed up and most Alaskans are more active, doing everything from family hikes to car and boat trips and fishing. These activities all expose participants to risks that can be avoided or minimized with knowledge about safety and risk mitigation.

Hikers should let people know where they plan to hike and when they plan to return. Drivers should always wear seatbelts and watch for other drivers who may be driving large recreational vehicles, pulling trailers or be over tired from playing too hard. And sport fishers and boaters should always watch the weather, use appropriate floatation devices and avoid conditions that are too extreme for their equipment and/or skill levels.

Alyeska encourages all Alaskans to adopt safe lifestyles. Thinking and acting safely will save lives, prevent injuries and help everybody enjoy the summer more.
