Concentrating
on safety through change
Alyeska Pipeline Service Company is entering a pivotal period as
we begin our pipeline reconfiguration project. This $250 million
project will be the single biggest investment in the Trans Alaska
Pipeline System (TAPS) since construction. It will also
fundamentally change the way we do business.
The real success of this project also depends upon our
environmental and safety performance. Our management team will
closely monitor our environmental indicators and continue to
actively promote workplace safety. This is a key point. In the
past couple of years, the Alyeska management team has made a
concerted effort to be more involved in safety. We recognized
safety as an area for improvement and made essential changes to
how we approached safety. Managers are increasingly more
accountable when it comes to workplace conditions and are taking a
proactive approach through observation and safety attests. (This
elevated commitment is part of our future delivery on safety.)
I’m convinced this is the best approach to take because of the
feedback I’ve received from employees. Quite simply, they’ve
expressed the opinion that management’s presence in the field
means we are walking our talk.
Many details about the project still need to be worked out, but we
know it will have a huge impact on our work force. We know
employees will have many questions about the project and we will
do our best to address all of their concerns in a timely manner
throughout the project.
As a company, we are committed to maintaining high safety
standards and operational integrity as we modernize the pipeline.
And I am personally committed to reinforcing TAPS’ fundamental
safety principles and providing a safe working environment for
every TAPS employee and contractor.
