Alyeska firefighters pass State Fire Exam
The Valdez Marine Terminal (VMT) and city of Valdez are safer
because VMT Fire Brigade members Justin Major, Melissa
Metzger, Ryan Wade and Ken White earned their Fire Fighter
Level 1 certificates in July.
The four VMT firefighters entered the Alaska fire-service
training program in April to prepare for state
firefighter-certification exams. The training program covers
vital firefighting and emergency response skills, from the
basics of donning protective clothing and rolling up hose, to
advanced fire-team techniques for attacking and extinguishing
fires.

David Wight, President and CEO
2005 United Way of Anchorage Campaign
I am honored to co-chair the United Way of Anchorage’s 2005
fund raising campaign. This annual drive kicks off on
September 1 and is key to helping make Anchorage a stronger,
healthier and more compassionate community.
The 2005 fund raising
campaign aims to raise $9.2 million dollars. Most of the funds
collected will help support some 50 local partner agencies
that touch and improve the lives of virtually every Alaskan
who lives in or visits Anchorage.

Face to Face
Wayne Swann
Safety Programs Supervisor
Wayne Swann was born and raised in Wyoming
and followed the oil boom to Alaska in 1976 when ARCO
transferred him to help develop Prudhoe Bay. He liked the idea
of moving to Alaska because, as far as he could tell, it was
just like Wyoming, only bigger and with more opportunity.
Wayne started working with Alyeska as a safety consultant
contractor in 2003 and joined the staff as Safety Programs
Supervisor in April 2005.

Pipeline 101
Shoes
The Trans Alaska Pipeline System has 39,000 “shoes” that hold
the pipeline on top of specially designed slider beams that
support above ground sections of the pipeline at approximately
60-foot intervals. The slider beams are held in place by
vertical supports embedded in the ground.
