Alyeska work crews reconfigure Pump Station 12

Alyeska recently took one of the TAPS pump stations permanently out of pumping operations because the station was no longer needed to accommodate changing pipeline throughput demands from North Slope production. Some buildings and other physical infrastructure at Pump Station 12 (PS 12) were removed.

Alyeska firefighters pass State Fire Exam

The Valdez Marine Terminal (VMT) and city of Valdez are safer because VMT Fire Brigade members Justin Major, Melissa Metzger, Ryan Wade and Ken White earned their Fire Fighter Level 1 certificates in July.

The four VMT firefighters entered the Alaska fire-service training program in April to prepare for state firefighter-certification exams. The training program covers vital firefighting and emergency response skills, from the basics of donning protective clothing and rolling up hose, to advanced fire-team techniques for attacking and extinguishing fires.

2005 United Way of Anchorage Campaign

I am honored to co-chair the United Way of Anchorage’s 2005 fund raising campaign. This annual drive kicks off on September 1 and is key to helping make Anchorage a stronger, healthier and more compassionate community.

The 2005 fund raising campaign aims to raise $9.2 million dollars. Most of the funds collected will help support some 50 local partner agencies that touch and improve the lives of virtually every Alaskan who lives in or visits Anchorage.

Wayne Swann
Safety Programs Supervisor

Wayne Swann was born and raised in Wyoming and followed the oil boom to Alaska in 1976 when ARCO transferred him to help develop Prudhoe Bay. He liked the idea of moving to Alaska because, as far as he could tell, it was just like Wyoming, only bigger and with more opportunity. Wayne started working with Alyeska as a safety consultant contractor in 2003 and joined the staff as Safety Programs Supervisor in April 2005.

Pipeline 101
Shoes

 The Trans Alaska Pipeline System has 39,000 “shoes” that hold the pipeline on top of specially designed slider beams that support above ground sections of the pipeline at approximately 60-foot intervals. The slider beams are held in place by vertical supports embedded in the ground.
