Source Control and Repair Team Training
Alyeska’s Source Control and Repair Team (SC&RT) completed
three days of intense hands-on training in May. Procedures were
tested, equipment and clamps were deployed, and a live petroleum
fire was extinguished using the advanced technology fire skids.
This all-volunteer group is made up of about 40 Alyeska and
contract personnel from around the state. Fred Bethune and Frank
Duncklee, Pipeline Maintenance & Oil Spill Coordinators, have
been key contributors to the team since its inception. Prior to
being established as the more formal SC&RT, the group began
making contributions to development of oil spill response
tactics and techniques. Alyeska focuses on three primary areas
of spill response preparedness: contingency planning, response
exercises and training and equipment.
“Rapid response is critical in minimizing the volume of oil
lost, containing or eliminating spilled oil, and preventing it
from entering waterways and other sensitive habitats,” Bethune
said.
Minimizing potential impact is dependent on arriving at the
scene as quickly as possible and having trained staff with the
appropriate tools. The SC&RT maintains a 24/7 call-out roster of
volunteers and keeps equipment and tools loaded on trailers to
insure rapid response. The level of response and readiness is
ultimately influenced by the equipment, so Alyeska is constantly
searching for advances in spill response equipment and adopting
new technology that will improve performance.
