Alyeska plans upgrades to Ballast Water Plant

Tankers arrive each week at the Valdez Marine Terminal (VMT) to transport crude oil from Prince William Sound to refineries on the West Coast. Upon arrival, a small number of tankers offload ballast water which is used to control buoyancy. The newest generation of tankers generally keeps the seawater ballast segregated from the oil tanks. Some of the older style tankers do not have the ability to segregate ballast. In those cases, the ballast becomes contaminated with remnants of oil previously carried in the tanks and must be processed at the terminal's Ballast Water Treatment (BWT) facility.

We Want You!

Paid internships are available through Alyeska’s Alaska Native Program. Every year, interns who are from Alaska or who are attending the University of Alaska are hired by managers and supervisors at Alyeska. This year, 15 interns from UAA, UAF, and Alaskans returning from out of state, were placed in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Valdez and at Pump Station 6. Varying backgrounds and academic disciplines means interns are placed in departments that compliment their specific area of study.

Commitment to diversity on TAPS

Alyeska’s commitment to Alaska Native hire reaches back to our beginnings as a company, and it is a commitment we will honor in the future.  The Alaska Native Utilization Agreement clearly demonstrates Alyeska’s dedication to fulfilling this commitment. Alyeska Pipeline, the State of Alaska and Alaska Natives are inextricably linked, but more important – it is simply the right thing to do. We’re proud to have employees representing all regions, from Barrow to Metlakatla.

Prince William Sound Response Coordinator

If you looked up ‘True Alaskan’ in the dictionary, you might find a picture of Steve Hood, 16-year Alyeska employee and about as Alaskan as they come.

Steve’s parents arrived in Valdez in the early 50’s when Valdez was a valuable deep water port for the military. Ammunition and all other military support requirements came by ship to Valdez and were then trucked north. The Hoods started a trucking firm and commercially fished.

Integrity Management on TAPS
Corrosion Coupons

With corrosion prevention and proper maintenance, the pipeline is expected to operate well into the future. Corrosion can impact the safety of the pipeline and the longevity of the entire system if not monitored. Alyeska employs corrosion “coupons” to monitor and measure corrosion on the mainline. These coupons are small thin bars inserted into the oil flow stream and then removed and weighed after a period of time to assess the corrosion rate.
