Paid
internships are available through Alyeska’s Alaska Native
Program. Every year, interns who are from Alaska or who are
attending the University of Alaska are hired by managers and
supervisors at Alyeska. This year, 15 interns from UAA, UAF, and
Alaskans returning from out of state, were placed in Anchorage,
Fairbanks, Valdez and at Pump Station 6. Varying backgrounds and
academic disciplines means interns are placed in departments
that compliment their specific area of study.
According to
Dan Eckman, the Alaskan Native Program Coordinator, internships
are 12 weeks, from the end of May to the end of August.
Interested applicants are required to submit an application
along with college transcripts and letters of reference. After
the first screening, applicants are interviewed by phone or in
person. In 2006, there were 60 applicants and 15 were selected.
Most students are sophomores or juniors, so it is not uncommon
for them to intern more than one summer.
Bonnie Jo
Savland, Alaska Native Program Manager, says the 2007 program
will be even better as the recruiting will be year round with
the emphasis on seasonal breaks where students returning from
school can work during the winter and summer holidays. Starting
in November, application packets for 2007 will be available
online for a total of 22 intern positions. Twelve positions are
focused on Alaska Native candidates and 10 will have a focus on
women and minorities. All qualified candidates are encouraged to
apply (www.alyeska-pipe.com).
