First Pump Station Upgraded
Alyeska Pipeline Service Company reached
a significant milestone as Pump Station 9, located near
Delta Junction, successfully transitioned to electrically
driven crude oil pumps. This is the first pump station to
convert to modular, scalable equipment as part of Alyeska’s
Strategic Reconfiguration (SR) project. This project
involves installing electrically driven crude oil pumps at
four pump stations and upgrading control systems using
advanced modern technology and processes.

Smart pig completes integrity inspection of TAPS
Alyeska is currently evaluating its pigging
program to make certain the necessary steps are taken
regarding the integrity and safe operation of the Trans
Alaska Pipeline System. Following the March 2006 North Slope
spill, Alyeska took action by moving up a scheduled smart
pig run, originally planned for 2007 to inspect the
pipeline. The pig successfully ran through the first segment
(PS 1 to PS 4) in August 2006 but data loss occurred in the
second segment (PS 4 to Valdez) due to wax build up on the
pig when it was run a month later.

Warren Mitvitnikoff, Mechanical
Maintenance
Before Warren Mitvitnikoff started his
27-year career with TAPS, his family already had a long work
history in Valdez. As a teenager, his mother, of Russian
Aleut descent and originally from Valdez, worked at the old
Dayville Cannery, now the site of the Valdez Marine
Terminal. His father, raised in Tatitlek and also Aleut,
fished Prince William Sound, as his ancestors had for
hundreds of years.

Integrity Management on TAPS
Safety Integrity Pressure Protection System
Safety Integrity Pressure Protection System (SIPPS) is a
critical evaluation system that will enhance the safety
design and significantly improve the system reliability of
TAPS. This March, the final cutover to the new SIPPS was
activated marking a significant phase of transitioning Pump
Station 9 to electrically driven pumps. This is an essential
milestone in the process of Strategic Reconfiguration that
will upgrade and standardize operating equipment to improve
efficiency.
