Crews repair corrosion area identified by pigging data

Crews near Pump Station 1 recently installed a pressure containing metal sleeve to repair areas of external corrosion on the pipeline, and have since reburied the pipe at that location.

Each year, Alyeska plans to investigate and repair mainline pipe based on data provided by “smart pigs.” The pigs use sensor technologies, such as ultrasonic and magnetic sensors, to locate external and internal metal loss or mechanical defects along the pipeline.

Out of the dark: Alyeska conducts spill exercise during nighttime hours

It’s Alyeska’s responsibility to be prepared for the unexpected. So when the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) recently called for a nighttime oil spill exercise, Alyeska was ready.

Alyeska’s successful response to the drill shows the organization’s dedication to prevention and response duties in Prince William Sound. ADEC called the drill to test Alyeska’s spill response plan, and the event gave Alyeska a unique opportunity to test equipment and personnel during darkness.

Progress continues on Strategic Reconfiguration upgrade project

For the past several years, Alyeska has worked toward upgrading control systems and installing electrical pumps along the Trans Alaska Pipeline System. The upgrade project offers benefits in both improving our flexibility for future throughput levels with its modular and scalable design and providing a more cost effective transportation system. This project - which we refer to as Strategic Reconfiguration (SR) - began in 2004 and called for work at four pump stations simultaneously

Steve Goudreau
Ballast Water Treatment Supervisor

1977—Jimmy Carter becomes president, the New York Yankees win the World Series, Three’s Company premieres, oil starts moving through the trans-Alaska pipeline system and Steve Goudreau joins the Alyeska Team. What a year.

Born and raised in Michigan, this “lifer” took an unlikely path to Valdez. Goudreau received his teaching degree in secondary education but went into construction instead. He now works as Alyeska’s Ballast Water Treatment Supervisor.

Communications on TAPS

The communication control system that runs along the pipeline from Pump Station 1 to the Valdez Marine Terminal is designed for triple redundancy protection, utilizing digital microwave, fiber optic cable and satellite control communications channels. The multiple mediums ensure the quick and reliable transfer of information throughout TAPS.
