Integrity Management on TAPS
Ballast Water Treatment

Due to lower ballast water flow and the need for health, safety and operability improvements, the existing Ballast Water Treatment (BWT) system at the Valdez Marine Terminal will undergo renovation. The current structure is outdated and oversized for forecasted needs. The BWT system has two purposes: to recover oil from the ballast and to treat the ballast water for return to the sea.

Recovered oil is returned to the crude oil system, and the separated water is treated and discharged into Port Valdez in compliance with federal and state permits. Project work at the BWT facility focuses on a permanent resolution to skimming oil from ballast tanks, reducing hydrocarbon emissions and replacing the current ballast water treatment system with one that is safer and of proper size for future ballast water volumes.
