Alyeska Honored With Alaska
Native Hunting Spear at ANSEP Banquet
In
Alaska Native culture, the hunting spear holds a place of
honor and reverence. Aptitude with the hunting spear,
utilized by Alaska Native hunters for over 10,000 years,
required concentration, mental fortitude, and, above all,
persistence—traits that easily lend themselves to the
successful pursuit of a higher education. With this
intersection of the ancient and the modern, the Alaska
Native Science and Engineering Program (ANSEP) has adopted
the Alaska Native hunting spear as a symbol of appreciation
to give to those who have been instrumental in furthering
the success of the program. On January 30, the leadership of
Alyeska was honored by the students and faculty of ANSEP at
their annual banquet dinner with a hunting spear for their
contributions.

Operational Milestone with 11,000th
Tanker Escort
On January 28, 2009, Alyeska Pipeline achieved
an operational milestone. The company’s Ship Escort/Response
Vessel System (SERVS) conducted its 11,000th tanker escort.
The marine tanker Polar Resolution departed from the Valdez
Marine Terminal under escort by SERVS’ tugs Alert, as the
lead tug, and Aware, as the sentinel. SERVS was established
in 1989 to prevent oil spills by assisting tankers in safe
navigation through Prince William Sound, and to protect the
environment by providing rapid and effective response
services to the Valdez Marine Terminal and Alaska crude oil
shippers.

President's Message
Kevin Hostler, President and CEO
Protecting the Waters of Prince William Sound
March 24th marked the 20th Anniversary of the Exxon Valdez
oil spill. I believe all of us remember where we were when
we heard the terrible news that the tanker had grounded and
oil was spilling into Prince William Sound. The lessons from
that spill have been incorporated in everything we do to
prevent a future occurrence. Today, Alyeska Pipeline runs
one of the premier offshore oil spill prevention and
response forces in the world. Our SERVS (Ship
Escort/Response Vessels System) organization is established
to prevent and if necessary respond to a future spill.

Pipeline 101:
Enhanced Tractor Tugs
The enhanced tractor tugs of Alyeska’s Ship
Escort/Response Vessel System were custom-built for the
unique job they perform: safely escort tankers through
Prince William Sound. At more than 10,000 horsepower, these
tractor tugs are powerful, extremely maneuverable and
generally regarded as the top oil spill response vessels in
the world. Their special propulsion system allows them to
push or pull in any direction with equal force, making them
highly maneuverable and more than capable of meeting the
challenges of operating in the Sound.
