New HI-FOG® fire protection
system installed at PS 6

Alyeska has completed the installation of a
new HI-FOG® water-mist fire protection system in the Permanent
Living Quarters (PLQ) at the Yukon Response Base (YRB, also know
as PS 6). This new system is part of a $4.5 million project that
will eventually include the installation of HI-FOG® sprinkler
systems in the PLQ’s located at PS 4 and PS 5.
The HI-FOG® System is a state-of-the-art fire suppression system
and is quickly evolving into the industry standard for
high-density population areas, protecting the state rooms and
cabins on 80 percent of the world’s cruise ships. This system is
also being widely adopted on remote crude oil platforms.
HI-FOG® replaces deluge, gas, foam, dry chemical, and other
traditional fire protection systems, and offers fire-protection
technology that is very efficient against most types of fires.
This system uses three mechanisms to fight fire: cooling,
radiant heat blocking and local oxygen inerting. Traditional
sprinkler systems use wetting as their main mechanism and,
therefore, wastefully use large volumes of water. The HI-FOG®
patented delivery uses water much more efficiently, utilizing up
to 90% less water than traditional sprinkler systems with
equivalent or better fire suppression.
“The new HI-FOG® water-mist sprinkler system in the PS 6 PLQ is
a significant safety enhancement,” said John Baldridge, Senior
Director of Pipeline Operations. “Sprinklers were not required
by fire code at the time the PLQ’s were built, so the
installation of this system is definitely a demonstration of
Alyeska’s commitment to safety”
Baldridge
went on to recognize all of the individuals who saw the project
through from the design phase to installation. “From start to
finish, the project has been well executed,” said Baldridge.
“Joel Lindsey, the Project Manager, and the crews working in the
field have done an outstanding job of providing a fit for
purpose, low maintenance system. I am looking forward to getting
the systems installed in the remaining PLQ’s.”
Larry Shier, Pipeline and Civil Maintenance Coordinator for the
YRB, also expressed his appreciation. “All of the men and women
living at the YRB PLQ are very pleased with Alyeska’s decision
to install the HI-FOG® system,” said Shier. “The installation of
this system in the sleeping rooms, mechanical rooms, and common
areas reduces potential property damage and makes the YRB a
safer facility for our people.”
Installation of the sprinkler systems at PS 5 will be completed
by the end of the year and PS 4’s system will be completed by
mid 2011.
