Trans Alaska Pipeline System prepares for future earthquakes

Construction crews started work this fall to prepare Pump Stations 1, 3, 4, 5 and 9 for upgrades as part of Alyeska's strategic reconfiguration, or pipeline modernization project. PS 1, 3, 4 and 9 are being electrified, automated and upgraded to use new modular mainline pump systems. Pump Station 5 is being electrified, automated and upgraded to use a new booster/injection pump system. PS 5 operates as a pressure relief station and does not have mainline pumps.

Workers removed foundation concrete and underground pipe to make room for new facilities at PS 1.They also expanded existing pads at PS 3 and 4, built a new access road at PS 4 and are installing new pilings at PS 5. Exploratory excavation at pile locations is underway at PS 1, 3, 4 and 9 in preparation for pile installation starting in late January 2005.

The reconfigured pump stations will be standardized to reduce maintenance and operations costs. Their modular design will allow Alyeska to scale pumping capacity to efficiently match changes in North Slope oil production. These pump station upgrades will help extend the Trans Alaska Pipeline System's economic life for decades into the future while helping to maintain its outstanding environmental, reliability and safety standards.
