SMOKE ALARM CAUSES TEMPORARY EVACUATION OF LIVING QUARTERS AT PUMP STATION 6

ANCHORAGE, AK. March 25, 1996. Alyeska Pipeline Service Company reported today that the living quarters at Pump Station 6 were evacuated at 3:30 a.m. on March 23, 1996 when smoke was discovered in the main entrance of the building. The Emergency Response Team investigated and discovered the source of the smoke was an overheated motor on the electrical heater in the main entrance. No fire occurred. The electrical heater was isolated and turned off. Crews were allowed back into the building at 3:50 a.m.

Each pump station maintains a trained Emergency Response Team and drills building evacuations and emergency response situations. All twenty-four people in the living quarters were evacuated in eight minutes. The Joint Pipeline Office has been notified of the incident.
