EXCAVATION WORK CONTINUES AT CHECK VALVE 92

ANCHORAGE, AK -- May 8, 1996 -- Alyeska Pipeline Service Company reported today that excavation work continues at Check Valve 92. It is estimated that approximately 5,000 gallons of liquid oil have been recovered from the site. Approximately 3,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil have been excavated. The total extent of the contamination has not been determined. Some of the contaminated soil is being hauled to Fairbanks for thermal remediation. The remainder will be removed to Fairbanks when load limits are lifted from the Richardson Highway.

The Joint Pipeline Office and Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation have been notified and have approved Alyeska's plan to process contaminated soil.
