ANCHORAGE, AK -- May 22, 1996 -- Alyeska Pipeline Service Company reported today that the northern and southern edges of the crude oil spill at Check Valve 92 have been identified. The crude oil migrated approximately 119 feet to the north and 131 feet to the south of Check Valve 92 along the pipeline. Most of the pipeline is located in a solid or fractured bedrock trench in this area. Crews are drilling borings at various locations near the pipeline right-of-way to determine if crude oil traveled in a lateral direction from the pipeline in the fractured bedrock zone.

Excavation of soil is continuing to the north of Check Valve 92 so the pipe in that area may be cleaned, inspected and recoated. South of Check Valve 92, the contaminated soil has been excavated and the pipeline has been cleaned, inspected, recoated and backfilled.

An estimated 2500 gallons of liquid crude oil have been recovered from the site. An estimated 3700 cubic yards of contaminated soil have been removed and will be remediated in Fairbanks at a soil remediation facility. The crude oil spill at Check Valve 92 was discovered on April 20 during a routine safety inspection.
