Press Release
A SECTION OF THE TRANS-ALASKA PIPELINE IS INSTALLED IN
THE SMITHSONIAN'S MUSEUM OF AMERICAN HISTORY
|
WASHINGTON, DC -- September 11, 1997 - A
27-foot section of the pipeline, complete with a pipeline pig, was installed this week in
an exhibit at the Museum of American History. This week construction of the exhibit began,
with Alyeska employees assisting the Smithsonian crew to install the pipe. The section of
48 inch pipe was fabricated in Fairbanks using materials that date back to original
construction. The pipeline display is an exact replica of the trans-Alaska pipeline,
complete with vertical supports, heat fins and a pipeline pig.
The section of pipe was donated to the
Museum by Alyeska Pipeline Service Company. It was fabricated at Alyeska facilities in
Fairbanks and was trucked across country to Washington D.C., where it arrived last week.
The pipeline is included in an exhibit
featuring artifacts from pipeline construction, artifacts from an earlier trans-Alaska
survey project, and historic and contemporary Alaska Native art. The exhibit opens on
October 22 and will run for approximately six months.
