RECOVERY OPERATIONS TO RUN THROUGH THE NIGHT

ANCHORAGE, AK -- January 10, 1997 -- Alyeska Pipeline Service Company reported this evening that most of the sheens discovered earlier today appear to have been recovered. Skimming operations will continue through the night. Response efforts will be re-evaluated tomorrow morning by the Incident Command, made up of Alyeska, United States Coast Guard, and Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation officials.

Preliminary laboratory tests on the recovered liquids indicate the source is not an active release of fresh crude oil. Further testing will continue through the weekend.
