OVERFLIGHT FINDS NO NEW SHEEN ON WATER; BALLAST WATER TREATMENT FACILITY WILL REMAIN CLOSED UNTIL TOMORROW

January 13, 1997 -- VALDEZ, AK -- A helicopter overflight of Port Valdez this morning finds no additional sheen on the water. On-water response crews are on stand-by, and will be used if additional sheen appears. Another overflight will occur today.

The Ballast Water Treatment Facility remains closed through tomorrow. Crews are cleaning portions of the facility. Sampling at BWT and lab analysis is continuing to determine what caused the sheen. So far the data is inconclusive.

Alyeska is developing a plan in case the BWT will be closed for a longer period of time.
