NEW PREVENTION AND RESPONSE TUG TO BE CHRISTENED IN VALDEZ

ANCHORAGE, AK – April 24, 2000 – Alyeska Pipeline Service Company will christen the ALERT on Wednesday, April 26, 2000 in Valdez, AK.  The ALERT is one of three Prevention and Response Tugs designed and built specifically for Alyeska Pipeline’s tanker escort operations in Prince William Sound by Crowley Marine Services.   The 140-foot, 10,192 horsepower Z-drive vessel was placed into service with Alyeska’s Ship Escort and Response Vessel System (SERVS) in February.

Jenny Gale, wife of recently retired Captain Roger Gale former Vice President of BP Oil Shipping Company USA, will christen the ALERT at 12:30 p.m. on the Alyeska SERVS dock.  Special guests in attendance for the christening Richard Campbell, President of BP Exploration (Alaska), Inc. and Anne Drinkwater, President, BP Pipelines (Alaska), Inc.

During her sea trials, ALERT generated a certified bollard pull of 300,000 pounds and a free running speed in excess of 16 knots.  The ALERT is equipped for firefighting, emergency response and oil spill recovery equipment.

Alyeska’s SERVS mission is to prevent oil spills by assisting tankers in safe navigation through Prince William Sound, and to protect the environment by providing effective response services to the Valdez Marine Terminal and Alaska crude oil shippers.

Stills and a video news release of the event will be available on Thursday, April 27.  If you are interested in attending the event, please contact Sandy McClintock at 907-834-7084.
