LIGHT SHEEN DISCOVERED AS VESSEL
PREPARES TO DEPART VALDEZ MARINE TERMINAL
|
VALDEZ, AK - OCTOBER 23, 2000 - At 9:13AM today, a crew member of the S/R North Slope
observed a light sheen within the boom as the tanker was being de-boomed and made ready
for departure. The tanker was immediately
re-boomed and an investigation to determine the origin of the sheen was initiated.
Inspection of the vessel by divers revealed a hairline fracture 8 to 10 inches in
length at the turn of the bilge of the #5 starboard cargo tank. The United States Coast Guard has ordered the tank
emptied to stop the release of oil. Cargo
transfer and temporary repair options, which are being evaluated, must be approved by the
U.S. Coast Guard.
Alyeska SERVS response personnel
responded and remain on scene. All sheen has
been contained within the boom. Response equipment includes one JBF skimmer inside the
boom and sorbent sweeps. The Valdez Star, a
dedicated oil recovery vessel, is standing by. Estimated
spill volume is less than one gallon.
Notifications were made including
the United States Coast Guard, the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation and the
Prince William Sound Regional Citizens Advisory Council.
