Pipeline Update

ANCHORAGE, AK – September 11, 2001 Noon – At the request of the United States Coast Guard, Alyeska Pipeline Service Company evacuated the Valdez Marine Terminal and is operating with a limited number of critical operations personnel. Military officials considered a KAL airliner inbound to Anchorage a threat to the terminal, and the Coast Guard requested that Alyeska evacuate the terminal. At the request of the Coast Guard, loading operations have been shut down and tankers are being moved to sea. The airliner has been escorted by military planes to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. Alyeska remains in a heightened state of security and preparedness. The pipeline is still operating.
