Governor to Tour Pipeline Leak Site

Media Advisory – Press Availability following tour in Fairbanks

ANCHORAGE, AK – October 8, 2001 – Alaska Governor Tony Knowles Monday will tour the section of the trans-Alaska Pipeline that was punctured by a bullet.

Knowles will fly over the impacted area, land at the site of the spill, and return to Fairbanks for a brief media availability at 3:00 PM in the Pope and President’s Room at the Fairbanks Airport.

Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Michelle Brown, Major General Phillip Oates, and Alyeska President David Wight will join Knowles on the tour.

An estimated total of 6,800 barrels or 285,600 gallons were spilled. 108,600 gallons have been recovered as of Monday morning.

Environmental cleanup efforts continue on site.
