Light Sheen Discovered at Valdez Marine Terminal

Valdez, AK – January 16, 2002 – At 10:38AM today (Wednesday), a light sheen was discovered inside the boom at Berth 4 of the Valdez Marine Terminal while the tank vessel SeaRiver Baytown was in the latter stages of completing loading operations. All operations were immediately suspended. The sheen, contained within the boom surrounding the ship, has been cleaned up. Inspection of the vessel revealed a hairline crack in starboard tank 6 approximately 3 feet above the water line.

The required notifications have been made. Alyeska’s Ship Escort and Response Vessel System (SERVS) personnel and equipment remain on the scene. The United States Coast Guard is also on the scene. An investigation is underway. Preliminary estimated spill volume is less than one teaspoon.

Updates will be provided as information becomes available.
