ALYESKA REPORT
WEEK OF APRIL 13, 1998
|
Satellite Back-up System Kicks In
The back-up satellite communication system
for the pipeline went into operation for approximately 40 minutes on Saturday morning
after the primary and secondary microwave voice communications to Pump Stations 1 through
4 were lost. Data communication was lost to Pump Station 4 for approximately seven
minutes. During this time the pump station was operated locally, instead of remotely
operated from the Operations Control Center (OCC) in Valdez. Satellite voice communication
to Pump Station 4 was never lost. The cause of the failure is believed to be a clogged
potentiometer at the Kaaruk repeater. No impact to throughput occurred.
The back-up satellite system provides
communication to the pump stations and remote sites if the microwave system is out of
operation.
