ALYESKA REPORT
WEEK OF JUNE 15, 1998
|
Landing Craft Heading To Dry Dock
The Krystal Sea, a landing craft in
Alyeskas Ship Escort Response Vessel System (SERVS) fleet, will travel to Seward for
dry docking and repairs after the vessel struck a rock in McPherson Passage on Saturday
morning. The #4 port tank sustained damage. The tank was empty at the time of the
incident. During a response, this tank would store recovered crude oil. No injuries
occurred. The Krystal Sea returned to Port Valdez under its own power. Divers
surveyed the damage on Sunday and placed a temporary patch on an approximately five-inch
crack in the tank. The Krystal Sea will depart Valdez for Seward on Wednesday for
permanent repairs. Both Kelly Ryan, owner and operator of the Krystal Sea, and the
United States Coast Guard are investigating the incident.
