ALYESKA REPORT
WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 14, 1998
|
Maintenance shutdown planned
Alyeska is in the final preparation stages
for a scheduled 36-hour maintenance shutdown of the Trans Alaska Pipeline System on
September 25 and 26. The shutdown will occur to allow repair and replacement of two
mainline valves: Remote Gate Valve (RGV) 80, north of Delta Junction, and Check Valve (CV)
122, 20 miles north of Valdez. These two valves did not meet Alyeskas performance
criteria when they were tested as part of Alyeskas Valve Program.
RGV 80 will be removed along with a segment
of pipe and replaced with a valve from Alyeskas inventory. CKV 122, which is buried,
will be opened and repaired in place by replacing internal sealing elements with equipment
from Alyeskas inventory. Preparations have been ongoing since the beginning of
summer.
Crews respond to
sheen on water
Work boats responded to a sheen on
the water near Berth 5 at the Valdez Marine Terminal on Saturday, September 5. The sheen
was later determined to be approximately one-quart of bunker fuel from the tanker at
berth. The exact source on board the tanker is not known. No additional sheen was found.
Divers arrived on Saturday to investigate and found no evidence of damage to the tanker.
While responding to the sheen, the crew of
a work boat was exposed to treated sewage which was released from the tanker marine
sanitation system. There is no indication of any adverse health impact to the workers on
board the work boat. Workers onboard the work boat were given tetanus shots and blood
tests were performed as a precautionary measure.
