ALYESKA REPORT
WEEK OF NOVEMBER 30, 1998

Escorting Tug Aids Rescue

The Sea Voyager, an escort tug in Alyeska Pipeline’s tanker escort fleet, towed a stranded private vessel into Port Valdez last evening. The private boat was stranded approximately twenty miles out of Port Valdez and was out of fuel and had a dead battery. The United States Coast Guard in Valdez asked Alyeska Pipeline to assist in the return of the vessel. No one was injured and the vessel was safely towed into the port.

Unannounced Spill Drill in Port Valdez

The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation and the United States Coast Guard called an unannounced oil spill response drill on Alyeska Pipeline’s Ship Escort Response Vessel System (SERVS) today at noon . The drill was designed to test the readiness of an unmanned equipment barge that is stationed in Port Valdez in the event of real emergency. The Pathfinder, one of the SERVS docking tugs, towed the barge into place and the large oil spill collection system staged on board the barge was deployed. The response vessel, Freedom Service, deployed boom as part of the exercise. The exercise took place in Shoup Bay in Port Valdez.

The collection system on board the barge is designed to skim approximately 4,400 barrels an hour.
