Commissions Construction of New Response Tugs
Alyeska Pipeline has commissioned the
construction of three new Prevention/Response Tugs (PRTs) for use in Prince William Sound.
The new tugs will join Alyeskas Ship Escort Response Vessel System (SERVS) fleet as
multi-purpose vessels. The new PRTs will have twice the horsepower of the current escort
vessels and will have a state of the art propulsion system to provide improved
maneuverability. The first of the three tugs will be delivered to Prince William Sound in
early 2000.
The new multi-purpose PRTs will be able to
dock and undock tankers, act as oil spill response vessels, and escort tankers through
Prince William Sound. Currently, separate vessels in the SERVS fleet are used for each
task. The three PRTs will replace three existing Escort/Response Vessels and one docking
tug.
The tugs will be owned and operated by
Crowley Marine Services. The tugs will be constructed by Dakota Creek Industries in
Anacortes, Washington and will cost over $13 million each.
Crowley Marine Services is also
constructing two new enhanced tractor tugs which will join the SERVS fleet in early 1999.
