ALYESKA REPORT
WEEK OF APRIL 12, 1999

Alyeska Assists with Steven’s Village Gravel Haul

Crews from Pump Station 6 assisted Steven’s Village by hauling gravel from an adjacent gravel pit to the village. The gravel will be used for ground preparation for new housing sites in Steven’s Village. Steven’s Village expects to build four houses this year and four next year.

The pump station crew brought two dump trucks and a front end loader to Steven’s Village via a 28 mile ice road on the Yukon River for the work. The gravel haul was completed from March 28 through April 5.

Lost Communication to Valve Causes Brief Pipeline Shutdown

The pipeline was shut down for approximately two hours on Sunday, April 11, when communications to Remote Gate Valve 69 were lost. The pipeline was restarted after crews traveled to the valve to visually inspect it. The valve is located approximately 20 miles north of Fairbanks. The loss of communication was caused by a blown fuse on a circuit card. Alascom, Alyeska’s communications contractor replaced the part and returned the valve to normal operation. The pipeline was returned to normal operation at 12:20 p.m.

The North Slope producers were reduced to 50 percent of normal production while the pipeline was shut down.

Communications to the Remote Gate Valves along the pipeline allow the pipeline control center in Valdez to see the status of the valves and control their movement. To ensure safe operation of the pipeline system, if communication is lost to a valve for more than two minutes, the pipeline is shut down until confirmation of the valve’s status is received
