ALYESKA REPORT
WEEK OF MAY 25, 1999

Tanker Vapor Control Update

The Tanker Vapor Control System at the Valdez Marine Terminal was returned to operation on Thursday, May 20, when Berth 4 was brought back into service. Maintenance work continued on Berth 5 until 4:00 p.m. Friday, May 21, when the Vapor Control System was returned to full operation.

The maintenance stop work was lifted on Wednesday evening.

Pump Station Crew Aids Rescue

A crew from Pump Station 7 assisted in the rescue of a climber who had fallen approximately 60 feet at Grapefruit Rocks. A friend of the climber contacted Pump Station 7 for assistance. Two technicians and the station’s medic responded with the station ambulance. The army medical unit from Ft. Wainwright responded to the call. Alyeska personnel assisted the medics in the highly technical rescue of the climber. Pump Station 7 is approximately 90 minutes north of Fairbanks and three miles from Grapefruit Rocks.

Gas Line Valves Replaced

Technicians at Pump Station 3 completed replacement of two six-inch valves on the station’s fuel gas line due to leaks in the valves. The valves that were replaced are on the 6-inch feeder line into the pump station. The leaks were detected during routine maintenance checks by the pump station crew. Preparation for the replacement of the valves began in December 1998.

The pump stations north of the Brooks Mountain Range operate on natural gas, supplied to the stations through a small diameter fuel gas pipeline that runs near the trans-Alaska pipeline. During the repair, Pump Station 3’s turbines, which normally operate on natural gas, were converted to liquid fuel to allow the station to remain operational. The maintenance work took approximately six hours to complete. The turbines were then returned to natural gas operation.

Alyeska Calls for Safety Time Out

Alyeska Pipeline will conduct a company-wide safety time out on Thursday morning, May 27, in support of the Department of Labor’s request for all Alaska businesses to take a time out for safety. Across the company, safety meetings will be held on the theme of Back to Basics.

Alyeska urges all Alaska businesses to support Commissioner Flanagan’s call for safety time out.
