WEEK OF JANUARY 31, 2000

Repairs Made to Berth Valve

Alyeska Pipeline completed repairs on a berth isolation valve on Berth 4 at the Valdez Marine Terminal last week. Intermittently since mid-December, the isolation valve has not closed on command. The berth isolation valve is part of the Tanker Vapor Control System and isolates the ship from the rest of the Marine Terminal when the vapor control system is not in use.

Alyeska met with the U.S. Coast Guard last week to discuss the valve’s status. Interim safety procedures were instituted to manually close the valve if the valve didn’t close when commanded. Since the safety procedures were implemented, the valve has responded to all electronic commands. Repairs were made on Friday, January 21. For approximately two weeks, technicians will continue to be stationed at the valve whenever it is used to insure the repairs were successful.
