Gulkana River Access Road
Bridge Upgrade
Work Almost Complete
Alyeska Pipeline Service Company will
complete upgrades this week on the
Gulkana River Access Road Bridge,
located 35 miles north of Glennallen. The bridge is approximately
150 feet long and is one of 42 bridges along the
Trans Alaska Pipeline System that will be repaired this year
as part of a $2.4 million Work Pad and Access Road Bridge
Repair project. The bridges were
installed during pipeline construction as
a temporary means of access to various material sites and
pipeline work pads. The bridges have since been permanently
retained for access to material sites, oil spill response/reconnaissance
operations and mainline pipeline maintenance
work. The bridges are being upgraded to meet Alyeskas
structural and seismic integrity design basis criteria
for bridges. Houston/NANA and Ahtna Construction companies
are completing upgrade work. None of the bridges
supports the pipeline.
Thompson Pass
Backpressure Control System
Out of Service for
Valve Installation
The Backpressure Control System for
Thompson Pass was taken out of
service today to reinstall a valve into the system.
The system will be out of service for four to six hours.
The valve was repaired after it was damaged by pieces
of a pipeline cleaning pig that entered the system in January.
Two other valves were also damaged by the cleaning
pig. The backpressure system has been operating with
two valves since February 21, 2000. The
system was installed in 1997 to eliminate vibrations in
the pipeline on the south slope of Thompson Pass. The vibrations
experienced while the backpressure system is out
of service will not create a risk to pipeline integrity. The
residents of the neighborhood near the pipeline in this area
have been notified of the situation and the repair schedule.

expectation for how a facility should
operate in the areas of safety, health, environment
and working with the communities around them,"
said Malone. "It was difficult to choose one from the almost
20 nominations I received for this years award. As I reviewed
these nominations, I was struck by the vast diversity
of both people and skills at work within Alyeska, all directed
toward making us the successful company that we are
today."
Pump Station 12 is approximately 65 miles
north of Valdez near the communities
