WEEK OF APRIL 03, 2000

Corrosion Repaired at Pump Station 4

Maintenance crews completed corrosion repairs to a 60-foot section of the pipeline just north of Pump Station 4, on March 27 th as part of Alyeska’s 2000 Corrosion Control Management Plan. The pipe was excavated, analyzed, recoated and reburied. Alyeska Pipeline reduced the maximum allowable operating pressure for this section of pipe from 901 pounds per square inch (psi) to 871 psi because of the corrosion found during the excavation. Operating pressure in this section of pipe is typically 300 psi. This section of pipe has been monitored through "smart" pig data since 1994.  The 8-inch fuel gas line that runs parallel to the mainline was also uncovered as part of the excavation. Isolated corrosion pitting was found, analyzed and repaired. Approximately 1100 feet of the fuel gas line north of the pump station was identified in 1990 as having corrosion. Preventive measures were taken at the time to arrest further corrosion. Alyeska continues to monitor this area with smart pigs and surveys. The fuel gas line provides natural gas to the first four pump stations. The situation was reported to the Office of Pipeline Safety.
