WEEK OF APRIL 11, 2000

Sun’s Ray Trips Fire Indicator and Shuts Down Metering Facility Near Valdez Marine Terminal

Alyeska’s metering station for the Petro Star Refinery near the Valdez Marine Terminal shutdown briefly on Friday evening, April 7, 2000 when a ray from the sun was reflected onto a ultraviolet detector in the metering station skid room. The detector ‘read’ the reflected ray as indication of a fire and initiated a metering shutdown. The event occurred when the area operator was making evening rounds and opened the door to the metering skid room. The sun was shining at an angle, that when the door was opened, the UV detector just inside the door was exposed to a ray reflected from the operator’s equipment. Operations returned to normal within 30 minutes. Oil Movements Team Engineers are determining the best way to correct the detector angle and avoid a repeat incident.
