WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 18, 2000

Third Prevention and Response Tug to be Christened in Kodiak

Alyeska Pipeline Service Company will christen the AWARE on September 28, 2000 in Kodiak, AK.  The AWARE is the third of three Prevention and Response Tugs designed and built specifically for Alyeska Pipeline’s tanker escort operations in Prince William Sound by Crowley Marine Services.   The 140-foot, 10,192 horsepower Z-drive vessel was placed into service with Alyeska’s Ship Escort and Response Vessel System (SERVS) in August.

Belinda Hisey, wife of Dan Hisey, Chief Operating Officer of Alyeska Pipeline Service Company, will christen the AWARE at 4:30 P.M. at Pier 2, Kodiak city dock.  Special guests in attendance for the christening include Admiral Thomas J. Barrett, Commander, 17th Juneau District, USCG, Mayor Carolyn Floyd, and Mayor Gary Stevens.  Alyeska has also extended invitations to children from surrounding villages to participate in educational tours of the tug.

During her sea trials, AWARE generated a certified bollard pull of 300,000 pounds and a free running speed in excess of 16 knots.  The AWARE is equipped for firefighting, emergency response and oil spill recovery equipment.

Alyeska’s SERVS mission is to prevent oil spills by assisting tankers in safe navigation through Prince William Sound, and to protect the environment by providing effective response services to the Valdez Marine Terminal and Alaska crude oil shippers.

Stills of the event will be available on Friday, September 28.  If you are interested in attending the event, please contact Sandy McClintock at 907-834-7084.
