Alyeska Shuts Down Pipeline for Valve
Testing
Fairbanks,
AK - Alyeska Pipeline Service Company will shut down the Trans-Alaska pipeline
October 7th for valve testing. The shutdown is scheduled to last approximately 8 hours.
Alyeska
employees and contractors will conduct tests on 12 valves along the pipeline. The valve
tests are part of the four-year valve testing program Alyeska initiated in 1996. The
systematic testing of all the valves will be completed at the end of this shutdown,
fulfilling Alyeskas commitment to test all 177 mainline valves by the end of the year 2000.
The purpose is
to test the sealing capabilities of each valve in the closed position. The work
should be completed in time for the scheduled restart
at 5:00 P.M. Saturday evening.
Two valves were
replaced and 33 other valves were tested during Alyeskas most recent planned
shutdown last month.
The producers
on the North Slope will continue to pump oil at less than 40% of their normal rate. The
crude is being diverted to storage tanks at Pump Station 1 for the duration of the
shutdown period.
