3-Day
Maintenance Shutdown of Berth 4 and 5 Begins Today
A three day maintenance shutdown
of Berth 4 and 5 at Alyeskas Valdez Marine Terminal began early Tuesday morning to
prepare ballast water piping for inspection later this year. The shutdown is not expected
to impact North Slope production or tanker traffic.
The 42 inch ballast water piping carries ballast water, a mixture of water and crude
oil, from tankers at the berth to the Ballast Water Treatment facility. Last year,
Alyeskas corrosion monitoring program identified a cracked liner and hole in the
pipe wall of Berth 3 ballast water piping. The Berth 3 and Berth 4 piping was inspected
last year with corrosion deficiencies corrected and the piping restored to full operating
status. Berth 5 is scheduled to be inspected this summer.
