WEEK OF APRIL 24, 2001

3-Day Maintenance Shutdown of Berth 4 and 5 Begins Today

A three day maintenance shutdown of Berth 4 and 5 at Alyeska’s Valdez Marine Terminal began early Tuesday morning to prepare ballast water piping for inspection later this year. The shutdown is not expected to impact North Slope production or tanker traffic.
The 42” inch ballast water piping carries ballast water, a mixture of water and crude oil, from tankers at the berth to the Ballast Water Treatment facility. Last year, Alyeska’s corrosion monitoring program identified a cracked liner and hole in the pipe wall of Berth 3 ballast water piping. The Berth 3 and Berth 4 piping was inspected last year with corrosion deficiencies corrected and the piping restored to full operating status. Berth 5 is scheduled to be inspected this summer.

Alaska Water Wastewater Management Association Award Recognizes Carl Rutz

At its annual meeting on April 18, the American Water Works Association, Alaska Section, and the Alaska Water Wastewater Management Association awarded Carl Rutz, Team Lead for the Ballast Water Treatment Facility at the Valdez Marine Terminal, special recognition as Large Plant Manager of the Year Award. Carl was recognized for his commitment to safety, outstanding leadership and innovation, his effective working relationships with regulatory agencies, the USCG and the local community.
Greg Tang, formerly Ballast Water Treatment technician, now Senior Laboratory Technician, received the Quarter Century Operators’ Club service award from the treasurer of the Water Environment Federation at the AWWA conference.
