WEEK OF JANUARY 11, 2002

Brine Spill Clean Up Underway At Pump Station 1

Alyeska Pipeline Service Company crews began cleaning up the site at Pump Station One where a refrigeration brine solution spilled into the gravel pad. Current clean up efforts are being conducted between one of the tanks at the pump station and the gas building. The gravel is being removed with a vacuum truck. Alyeska will repair a small section of the refrigeration line with a Weld-O-Let patch where a small dimple in the line has a pin-sized hole. Alyeska suspects dimple in the refrigeration line was caused by a strike from a grounding rod. Grounding rods are used to ensure adequate protection from lightning. Once the repair is complete, the line will be re-tested to confirm that the pin-sized hole is the only leak in the line. Alyeska discovered the 2450-gallon spill on January 1st and reported the information to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation.
